# What won’t change

> What endures, whatever builds the thing.

Every few years the tools of design are replaced, and every time some part of the discipline announces its own ending. This time the replacement is larger: the making itself can be handed to a machine. Before asking what that changes, it is worth asking what it leaves exactly where it was.

The answer is more than it first appears. What endures is not the skill attached to any particular tool. It is the set of conditions design has always worked within: the people on the other side of the work, and the responsibility for deciding what reaches them. Those change slowly, if at all, and they are where a designer's footing is safest.

## People still have bodies

Hands, eyes, attention and fatigue set the limits of every interface and every building. A thumb reaches the same distance it did a decade ago. Low contrast still fails the same eyes in the same afternoon light. Someone carrying shopping still needs a door that opens without a second thought.

Generated work inherits none of this by default. It inherits the average of what has been made before, mistakes included. The designer who understands the body, its reach, its tolerance for noise and the way it tires, holds knowledge that every new tool still has to be told. As interfaces move off screens and into rooms, vehicles and objects, that knowledge matters more, because the body becomes the whole interface again.

## Someone still decides what is worth making

Generation answers “how”. It does not answer “whether”. A system will produce a hundred credible versions of a product nobody needs, and it will do so cheerfully. The decision about what deserves to exist, and the willingness to answer for it, sits outside the machine.

That decision was always the centre of design, even when the hours went elsewhere. Now that making is cheap, the cost of deciding badly rises: the wrong thing ships faster, at greater scale, to more people. The designer's leverage moves to the moment a direction is chosen and a line is drawn under the alternatives.

## Trust is still earned slowly

_Observed_
Disciplines: product

People trust a product the way they trust a person: through consistency, observed over time. A system that can rewrite its interface overnight still earns trust at the same old speed, one kept promise at a time.

This sets a quiet limit on how much a product should change itself. Personalisation that moves the furniture on every visit spends trust faster than it earns it. The lasting work is deciding what must stay fixed, so that everything else is free to adapt.

> The products I trust most change least in the places my hands already know. Adapt everything else.

## Context is still local

_Prediction · near future · medium confidence_
Disciplines: architecture, product

A site, a culture, a regulation, a neighbourhood. Models trained on the world produce answers for the world, and nobody lives in the world in general. The slope of one particular street, the way one community uses its square, the words one profession uses for its own work: none of this is in the training data in a form precise enough to rely on.

The designer who knows a place and its people supplies what general systems cannot. As generated work becomes plentiful and interchangeable, local knowledge is what makes an answer right rather than merely plausible.

## Care is still visible

_Observed_
Disciplines: product, hardware

People notice when something was made with attention, even when they can't say what they noticed. A transition that lands at the right speed. A handle that sits where the hand expects it. A sentence that says exactly enough.

As the average quality of made things rises, the distance between average and cared-for becomes the thing people look for and pay for. Care is hard to fake, because it is made of many small decisions, each of which someone had to think worth making.

None of this argues for standing still. It argues for knowing where to stand. The tools will keep changing, and quickly. The people, their bodies, their places and their trust will change slowly. A designer who builds on the second can afford to be fearless about the first.

Have your say: reply to any idea on X. The best replies are added beside the idea they answer.
