Every chapter points somewhere. Taken together, they describe a discipline that is smaller in its hours and larger in its reach.

The designer of the next decade spends less time making first drafts and more time shaping, cutting and directing them. Editing is a craft in its own right, and it will be taught like one.

## Smaller teams, wider range

A team of three can now cover what used to need thirty. Designers will be expected to hold more of the product in their heads: research, systems, code, launch.

## Design moves into strategy and policy

Disciplines: product, architecture

If making is cheap, the leverage is in deciding. Design thinking that once stopped at the interface reaches into how organisations choose what to build, and how cities choose what to allow.

## The disciplines blur at the edges

Product, hardware, engineering and architecture share more tools every year. The specialisms will remain, but the walls between them get thinner, and the most interesting work happens where they meet.

Have your say: reply to any idea on X. The best replies are added beside the idea they answer.
