About

Who is asking, and why

Design After AI asks one question: what is designing, once AI is part of how things are made and how they reach people?

It covers every kind of design, from product and hardware to engineering and architecture, and it is organised into seven chapters. Five look through one lens each. Two frame them: where design stands today, and where it is going.

How it works

Each chapter starts as a set of field notes and becomes an essay once the ideas hold together. Every chapter carries a version number. When thinking changes, the chapter changes, and earlier versions stay readable, so the old position is never hidden. Every idea is marked as observed, if it is already happening, or as a prediction for the near or far future, with how confident we are in it, so you can tell what has arrived from what is still coming.

Who writes it

Design After AI is written and edited by Justin. It is a place to capture what firms up, and a reference for anyone who wants to start their own thinking from it.

Taking part

Under every idea is a “Have your say” link, which opens a post on X quoting the idea. The best responses are added back to the page beside the idea they answer, with a link to the person who wrote them. Longer extensions can be pitched in the same way, and each one is approved by hand.
